Homework: Start by reviewing the C diminished chord until you're comfortable with its shape and understand that it's built from the formula 1, ♭3, ♭5.

Next, convert it into a C half diminished (Cm7♭5) by adding the ♭7. As you play the chord, say the chord tones out loud: 1, ♭3, ♭5, ♭7. This will help reinforce the formula instead of simply memorizing the shape.

Once you're comfortable with the chord, keep the exact same shape and move it up one fret at a time. As you do, name each chord out loud:

• 3rd fret – Cm7♭5

• 4th fret – C♯m7♭5 (or D♭m7♭5)

• 5th fret – Dm7♭5

• Continue all the way to the 12th fret.

The goal is to connect the chord shape to its root note, so you can quickly identify and play a half diminished chord anywhere on the neck.

Bonus Challenge: Use a chromatic tuner to identify each note within the chord and verify that it follows the 1, ♭3, ♭5, ♭7 formula. Understanding how the chord is constructed is just as important as being able to play the shape.
