Homework: Augmented Chords

This week, your goal is to understand what makes an augmented chord unique.

1. Review the Guide

Read through the supplemental PDF and memorize the formula:

1 – 3 – ♯5

That's the recipe for every augmented chord.

2. Hear the Difference

Play an open C major chord with a tuner on.

Notice that the G string is open (the note G, which is the 5th).

Now fret the 1st fret of the G string (G♯) and play the chord again. Listen to how changing just one note completely transforms the sound.

3. Try Another Example

Play an open D major chord and locate the 5th (A) on the 2nd fret of the G string.

Now raise it one fret to the 3rd fret (A♯) and play the chord again.

Understand that an augmented chord is simply a major chord with a raised (♯5). Train your ear to recognize how changing just one note creates its distinctive sound.
